Leveraging his experience and expertise in conveyancing and banking practices, Dato’ Lawrence Chiong accepted a partnership offer (at the age of 27) at a Johor Bahru-based legal firm. He became the key partner managing the firm’s conveyancing, corporate, and litigation departments for both the Johor Bahru and Johor Jaya offices for over four years before founding Chiong & Partners (CnP) in March 2009.
Over the years, Dato’s areas of practice have expanded to include ship financing, conveyancing, loan and security documentation, commercial and company secretarial matters, as well as civil, commercial, and general litigation. Having previously served as panel solicitor for prestigious banks and financial institutions, Dato’ brings a competitive edge and practical depth to the legal advice and services offered at CnP. As the Managing Partner, he continues to maintain strong relationships with clients, including those overseas.
Dato’ is an active member of the Malaysian Bar. He served as the Founding Chairman of the Johore Young Lawyers Committee (JYLC) from 2006 to 2010 and as the Chairman of the Conveyancing Practice Committee (CPC) of the Johore Bar Committee for the 2010/2011 term. He has also been a committee member of the National Young Lawyers Committee since 2006 and the Conveyancing Practice Committee of the Bar Council Malaysia since 2010.

In addition to his legal practice, Dato’ Lawrence Chiong is a qualified mediator. He has been a member of the Malaysia International Mediation Centre (“MIMC”) since 2010 and was appointed as a mediator by the Shantou Intermediate People’s Court in Guangdong Province, China, on 22 December 2020. In 2023, he was appointed as a mediator at the Sanya International Commercial Mediation Center (“SICMC”) and as an arbitrator at the Xi’an Arbitration Commission (“XAAC”) on 29 January 2023. In 2024, he was appointed as an arbitrator by the Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber (“APIAC”). Dato’ is also a Certified Trainer under the Human Resources Development Fund (“HRD Corp”) and was awarded the Certificate of Outstanding Achievement by Malaysia’s Minister of Human Resources on 28 September 2020.
Dato’ is currently pursuing a DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) at the International University of Malaya-Wales (a collaboration between the University of Malaya and the University of Wales, UK). He successfully completed his LL.M. (Master of Laws in International Commercial Law) from the University of Salford, Manchester, United Kingdom, in June 2018. These qualifications further enhance CnP’s ability to operate on an international and cross-border platform.
On 7 January 2021, Dato’ Lawrence Chiong was appointed by the Attorney General’s Chambers in Putrajaya to practice as a Notary Public in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. This appointment elevates CnP to an even higher level of professional standing.
Dato’ Lawrence Chiong will be stationed as the representative at CnP’s representative office in Sanya, Hainan, and is authorized to handle all relevant matters for the office in Sanya, Hainan Province.
